More than a hundred years ago now Clarence E. Mulford began writing about the Bar 20 ranch and the cowboys who rode there…led by one in particular named Hopalong Cassidy.
In the mid 1930’s a motion picture producer named Harry “Pop” Sherman and an actor named William Lawrence Boyd launched a series of westerns based on the Mulford novels. But, Sherman and Boyd’s Hoppy was a different kind of hero than Mulford had created. The silver screen Hoppy was dressed all in black, riding a pure white horse. He had a smile as wide as the vast western plains and an unforgettable laugh, but he could be cold as steel when he needed to be. He had gray hair and a thing called wisdom.
It is this silver screen Hoppy that most remember. And, it is this silver screen Hoppy that is featured in an exciting new western adventure by Wild Ol’ Dan Blasius, based on an original motion picture manuscript by Jerry S. Rosenthal.
The book is filled with just about everything that ever happened in a Hoppy movie…stagecoach hold-ups, prairie fires, an ambush out in the rocks, a classic, tension packed shootout, a terrifying cattle stampede and a whole lot more! Each chapter reads like one of the ol’ 15 part cowboy movie serials …action and thrill-packed!

ROUTE 800 NOW THE 'HOPPY HIGHWAY'
COLUMBUS - Route 800 in Hendrysburg has been designated "William 'Hopalong Cassidy' Boyd Memorial Highay." That name was added to a bill adopted by the Ohio General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Bob Taft. State Sen. Jim Carnes, R-St. Clairsville, introduced the amendement adding the Hopalong Highway name to the bill. Amended House Bill 287, which designateds memorial highways across Ohio. "I am sure that many people, including myself are pleased that a section of our highway has been designated to pay tribute to Hopalong Cassidy, a cowboy movie star, who along with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, played a big part in my childhood and the childhood of an entire generation," Carnes said. "This memorial gives us the opportunity to pay respect to someone who significantly contributed to ourlives and history." The Village of Hendrysburg is the birth place of William Boyd, who went on in life to portray Hopalong Cassidy in movies and television. Boyd grew up in Cambridge, where a festival in his honor is held annually. (The Jeffersonian November 4, 1999)
